Vendor has advised: Need your customer to decide how they would like to measure case depth. See previous emails on potential definition pulled from BAC5641. (Ball in your court) .

We need to ping Pacmet again, so they can break down exactly what's left that needs to be clarified so Tyler can communicate back to the customer for support..

Vendor has also advised of another problem: Note 7 says to heat treat to 125-150ksi. To get 4340 to a tensile strength of 125-150ksi it needs to be tempered at around 1150F. Normal carburizing tempers are 300-400F. If we heat treat to 125-150ksi, then carburize, the re-hardening process is going to undo the 125-150ksi treatment and the whole part will be in the 50-55HRC ballpark. If we carburize then heat treat to 125-150ksi then the 1150 temper will drop case hardness well below the 55-60HRC requirement. We’d be lucky to get 40HRC (this is an off the cuff estimate, there is no real data for this number). I do not see the note 7 requirement flowed down on the PO, so if that conflict has already been resolved the only things we need is permission to use a part for testing (alternatively, you can supply a test piece that is approximately the same thickness as a part) as well as a definition for the case depth. .

Vendor has advised: Looking at this PO we will need a method for evaluating case depth. 4340 will have a core hardness above 48HRC after carburizing (See AMS2759/7E, 3.6.1.2.1). Generally case depth is defined as the point where the hardness drops below 50HRC but this alloy will be over 50HRC in the core so that definition will not work.
